Java Malware Exploits Both Windows And Mac Users

Symantec has discovered a new form of Java malware that infects both Apple and Windows machines, according to research posted on the company’s Security Response blog.
The entry, penned by researcher Takashi Katsuki, describes a strain of Java Applet malware that either drops a Python-based malware in Mac operating systems or an executable-form of malware in Windows computers. If opened, both forms of malware could launch a Trojan horse that could trigger a back door on the computer, regardless of the platform.

The malware exploits the Oracle Java SE Remote Java Runtime Environment Code Execution Vulnerability (CVE-2012-0507) to download the malware.

According to the post, the Mac back door Trojan can currently only control polling times, or “how many times it gets commands from the server at certain time intervals.” If enabled however, the Trojan can also download files, list files and folders, open a remote shell, sleep or upload files.

The Trojan for Windows can send information about the infected computer and disk, its memory usage, OS version and user name, in addition to downloading and executing files and opening shells to receive commands

Windows machine you can protect the machine by updating Java and your windows operating system

Mac has also pushed out an update

Keep your machines backed up or create images of them. By having a backup you reduce the risk of loss

Router, Firewall, Network Security Appliance - What's the Difference?

Today, virtually every Internet connection has a router that does NAT (Network Address Translation). In English, that means multiple PCs sharing an Internet connection, all from behind a single public IP address on the Internet (i.e. your PC has an IP that starts with 192.168 or 10). This provides a basic level of protection for the PCs as it keeps out unsolicited, inbound traffic from the Internet.

So what makes a firewall different than a router? Firewalls typically have a key feature that routers don't - they can limit the traffic that is permitted outbound. This allows you to deny all types of traffic and then permit only the traffic you want outbound. This can help prevent malware from connecting out to a bad guy, bypassing the protection offered by a router. This provides better control over what can be done on a protected PC.

However, virtually every firewall configuration permits web surfing as that is one of the key things people do on the Internet. As such, malware authors have adapted their malware to use the HTTP ports associated with web surfing to allow their malware to connect back to them. So, what is a user to do?

This is where Network Security Appliances come into play. Security appliances are "firewalls on steroids". They take the functionality of firewalls and add "unified threat management", adding intelligent inspection of traffic that passes through the device. Now, if you surf to a bad place that tries to hijack your browser, the security appliance can see the attack and stop it in its tracks. Similarly, if you try to download a virus, it can see this and block the download.

I often summarize the difference between a firewall and a network security appliance like this... A firewall is like a traffic cop directing traffic. So long as you are in the left turn lane, you will be permitted to turn left, even if you are a bad guy because the cop cannot see in your trunk to see you are carrying stolen merchandise. But a network security appliance is like replacing the cop with the National Guard, and having them stop each car and searching it, blowing up any bad guys that come through.

The SonicWALL line of Network Security Appliances provides a comprehensive solution and an excellent layer for your perimeter security strategy. They also provide the best "bang for your buck" in the industry. With models suitable for the home office up to largest data centers, and a simple to configure interface, SonicWALL is easy to maintain over time. "Several years ago, we took on the antivirus business by introducing an Unlimited Home License, which was one license for all the computers in your home. But we didn't stop there. For some time now, we have been researching the concept of a "lifetime" antivirus license, which gives you unlimited antivirus updates for one PC. People seem to love the idea of never having to deal with the hassle and expense of paying annually for updates! So now, we've decided to launch this product for June.

"With the PC Lifetime License, you never have to pay for antivirus updates ever again on the computer you install it on. It's a wonderful way to save on the expense and frustration of annually having to "re-up" your license. One fee. That's it. It's beautifully simple."

And guys, we are launching the PC lifetime license through June 30. We are doing a pilot/test to see if this is something you would be interested in purchasing. If the PC lifetime licenses does well, we will continue to offer them on our website. There will be an upgrade path for our current customers in the coming weeks, which we will make available via future editions of SSN and personal emails. If you are up for renewal of your current subscriptions you will see the option in our cart for the PC lifetime licenses

Save your PC

Unfortunately having antivirus on your pc will not always stop a virus or Trojans.
The best thing you can do is have  layered protection.
Do not depend on one piece of the puzzel to save your data or your machine
1.       Create a user that does not have administrator rights on the PC. This will block unwanted programs or executables from being installed on the PC.
2.       If possible have Gateway antivirus and spyware protection on the firewall or router. Stop viruses at the gateway before they get to the PC
3.       Have some sort of virus protection on the PC itself. Set it up to automatically scan your pc every day.
4.       Antivirus must be up to date
5.       Use additional tools and run them regularly to scan for viruses and Trojans. I recommend using malware bites. It is a free application
6.       The most important thing you can do is make a backup of the machine. The backup should be able to restore the entire machine not only the data. At some point this will be save you

Remmember it is not if but when. be proactive.

Keep that machine running and remember to go green when you can
